Question:  My window treatments are in dire need of an update, but I feel clueless as to how and what to do with them.

Answer: Window treatments often seem to turn into a design challenge or major investment.  A nicely decorated window compliments the room. Today, less is more, with the focus on accessorizing the room rather than overwhelming it.  Modern window fashion is all about simplicity, and minimal, easy care.

The first consideration should be function – whether treatments are needed for privacy and/or light control.

Once determined, the next step is to determine the esthetics of the room and the treatment best suited for all the above.

Lush velvets and silks are still being used, but styles have changed. Full, bunched gathers are gone and are replaced with plain panels or simple pleats. Organic fibers are the most sought after – cottons, linens, open weaves – offering unique textures.  Yet, if privacy is an important function, these natural fibers may not be enough.

For function, blinds, shades, screens or shutters may be inset in windows. Various types of roller blinds, Venetians and slatted wood blinds are still available.  Roman blinds are a favorite and can be made from fabric, bamboo, etc.

A classic simple look is to hang stationary floor-length panels on both sides of the window. Fabulous fabrics can liven, soften, or add pattern and texture to any room.  Drapes should always be lined for a longer lifespan, as well as allow them to hang properly.

Today’s drapes are not only all about the fabulous fabric, but also about the hardware – which is as important as the window treatment itself.  Hardware includes the rod, finials and brackets, and comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colours.  Material choices include wood or a metal of chrome, brushed nickel, and brass. Be prepared to sometimes pay as much or more for the hardware as you do for the treatment.  After all, it IS drapery jewelry!

Air Quality Testing: Our mold technician will take an air sample from the room. The sample will be sent to an accredited lab and the results will reveal exactly the type of mold spores present in your space and in what concentrations. You will receive a report of the results and our professional recommendation regarding how to proceed.

Professional Mold Remediation: Mold remediation is the removal or clean-up of mold from contaminated areas or materials. If properly performed, mold remediation will also prevent mold from growing back or from spreading to non-contaminated areas. This is why it is important to hire an experienced mold remediation professional.

A Visual Inspection

Inspection includes asking the client questions regarding the history of the home, searching the home for any possible breaches where moisture issues could occur, observing air flow patterns, inspecting windows and HVAC system, inspecting materials used in the building such as under sinks, attics, walls, carpets, flooring, out door siding, flashing, and eaves systems and more.

Air Testing for Mold

If mold has not been found upon the visual inspection process, then the client and inspector may decide to do indoor air mold testing. This will determine the level of indoor mold spore concentrations, provide a list of spore types, and individual levels of concentrations of spore types such as Stachybotrys, Chaetomium, Penicillium and Aspergillus types as well as several others. Minimum of Two samples must be taken, one outside of the building, which is an outdoor control sample to determine the mold types and concentrations in the air, and another in the suspect area of the home. The additional outdoor control sample is also used to determine if there is an indoor mold growth source.

Tape Testing for Mold

Mold growth may occur on the surface of materials. A tape lift is often used for surface sampling by stripping the suspect area surface with specially designed clear tape. The sample is then transferred to a microscope slide and then placed in a sealed tight container and transported to a laboratory for complete analysis.

Swab Testing for Mold

This type of testing is normally done were visible mold is found to determine the type of fungi. The results of this testing will determine if the mold present in this area is toxic or non-toxic. If visible mold is found in more than one location on the property, a swab test must be done at each location. Laboratory results will determine the type of microbial growth that is present.
